The Hurricane - San Francisco

$ 28.00

The Hurricane was a pre-tiki bar and nightclub located in the entertainment district of the “International Settlement” of San Francisco. The now defunct area was known for attracting sailors passing through town with its variety of bars and shows including Pago Pago and Moulin Rouge. The Hurricane opened in December 1940 and was filled with Polynesian decor and ambiance. It had a thatched roof, tapa cloth, large murals, a storm scene, entertainment, and is thought to have had some of the earliest tiki mugs. One mug featured a skull with a naked women laying across it which is pretty risqué for the era. The menu really transports you back to a time when a Daiquiri was .35, a Hurricane $1.00, and a note on the menu that said “kindly leave your name and address before ordering a third of any of these drinks.”

The Hurricane later became the well known Little Fox Theater, and was sold to Francis Ford Coppola in the 1970s.
