Located in Minneapolis, inside Hotel Nicollet, the Waikiki Room was an elaborately decorated Polynesian oasis for tropical food and beverages. The hotel engaged a Hawaiian architect and chef, and spared no expense with the decor or menu. The interior featured items and artifacts from Japan, Tahiti, Hong Kong and Samoa to name just a few locations. 7000 lengths of Bamboo, giant clam shells, tapa cloth, coral and velvet paintings created “an atmosphere as exciting, yet as relaxing as Hawaii itself!” The menu feature Mandarin Duck to their Famous Ribs (see recipe below), and the cocktails like Waikiki Downfall, Hilo Diver & Zombie.
The Waikiki Room Opened Feb 1953, and moved its location across town to Hotel Leamington in February 1976. This hotel was demolished in 1991, but it is not clear if the Waikiki Room lasted that long.
