Aku-Aku Polynesian Room was located in the Town House Motel in Toledo Ohio. Opened in 1960, the lounge/ restaurant was as well known for its impressive list of performers like Frank Sinatra, Count Bassie, Duke Ellington and Phyllis Diller, as it was for its colorful owner Irv “Slick” Shapiro.
A gathering place for high society, politicians and Detroit’s crime families, Aku-Aku had entertainment, a full Cantonese menu, as well as American staples (steak) and Jewish fare (chopped chicken liver). A complete cocktail menu featured special tiki drinks like the Aku Zombie Special for $2.00, only 2 per customer, and the Aku-Aku Daiquiri with lime lichee for $1.25.
Closed in 1973 and demolished in 1989, many Toledoans remember Aku-Aku with great fondness:
“There’s never been any place like that since. Not even close.”
