Located in New Orleans, BaliHa’i at the Beach was built alongside the man made lake Pontchartrain Beach. Your experience started when a bamboo decorated “Sampan Taxi” would pick you up in the parking lot, serve you an on board Tiki drink, and drop you off at the impressive bamboo A-frame entrance. Upon entering, guests describe the decor as “super over the top” and “meticulously detailed design.” Palm fronds, fishing traps, Japanese fish floats, Taiwanese spears, tikis and totems and other Pacific region artifacts decorated the decor of the restaurant and the private event spaces named the Bora Bora Hut, the Lanai Hut and the Samoan Hut. Boozy drinks were served theatrically including one drink that was dispensed from a large carved volcano, and their signature mug was a copy of Tiki Bob’s in San Francisco.
Bali Ha’i at the Beach opened in 1958, and like so many beloved tiki establishments had fire damage in 1986, the memorabilia was sold off in 1988, and in 1990 another fire destroyed the thatch roof.
