Located overlooking picturesque Tiburon Bay, bartender Tommie Cox opened Tiburon Tommie's Pier 41 with chef Johnnie Won in 1958. Won, a former employee of Trader Vics and Oakland’s Zombie Village, cooked authentic Cantonese and Polynesian dishes to accompany Cox’s tasty Mai Tais.

By no surprise, the restaurant became a fixture in Tiburon. As described by the Independent-Journal in 1959, “Restaurant decorations are cleverly done…. You have to spend a little time studying them to realize just how much advance thought went into the general scheme. Many designs are authentically Maori and Polynesian.” Decor featured tikis, log boats hanging from the ceiling, carved woodwork, and later on a waterfall was added.

As the restaurant grew in popularity, so did the space and they added the Maori Sky Room upstairs, with a grand view of San Francisco. Their reputation for their special version of the Mai Tai became so popular that in 1963 the restaurant was renamed Tiburon Tommie’s Mai Tai. Whether you were on a date, came for their Hawaiian Luaus, Tahitians feasts, or their big anniversary parties, Tiburon Tommie's was an icon on Main Street until it closed in 1995.
