The Congo Room was located in one of Palm Springs most iconic tiki landmarks, The Tropics (now The Caliente Tropics Resort). Not a tiki bar or even a Polynesian themed restaurant, but how could you not love the logo with the Tiki mask on it!
The Congo Room was a steakhouse overlooking the hotel pool and it had an intimate cocktail lounge pictured below. When it opened in 1964, The Congo Room and its underground counterpart the Cellar Bar, was well known for attracting the Rat Pack and Palm Springs celebrities. In later years, the Cellar bar closed and because of its porous walls it eventually filled with water. It was entombed in concrete in the 1980s. After that the Congo Room became Hawaiian Bill’s for a while.
In 2017, Rory Snyder transformed the space into the Reef Bar, and is definitely a tiki must do when visiting Palm Springs. The grounds still have several detailed vintage tikis by carver Ed Crissman, and the hotel is the current location of the annual Tiki Caliente Event.
