Opened in 1949, Honolulu Harry’s Waikiki provided “entertainment direct from Hawaii” and “dancing under Hawaiian skies”. Located on the corner of Clarendon and Wilson Ave. in uptown Chicago, the restaurant featured the Surf Room & Stage, the Waikiki Bar and The Hooanea Lounge. There was nightly entertainment, a menu featuring Cantonese, Japanese, Hawaiian and American fare, and of course a variety of classic and new tiki drinks.
Little is know about the owner or when Honolulu Harry’s closed, but a few fun facts:
Gwen Keaké akamai Kennedy who is the founder of Barefoot Hawaiian, one of the largest and most-booked Polynesian Performing Arts companies, got her start performing on stage at Honolulu Harry’s at age 3.
Before becoming Honolulu Harry’s Waikiki, the location was the Barrel O’ Fun Tavern, rumored to be a favorite hangout of gangster John Dillinger.
