In 1961, The Kon Tiki in Cleveland was the third in the Steven Crane chain to open in partnership with Sheraton Hotels, following the Montreal and Portland locations. Inside you would have found a profusion of plants with the walls decorated with tapa cloths, carvings, ancient weapons, shields, Tiki gods and a waterfall filling the pool. The food and drink included many exotic and unique specialties that offered unfamiliar delights to the diner or table-traveler.
If I had been there, I think I would have splurged for the most expensive cocktail, The Zombie for $2.25. The Kon Tiki closed in 1976 but you can bring back the memory with this month’s t-shirt design!
