You wouldn’t think Kansas City would be a hub for tiki establishments, but in the late 1950, 60s and 70s KC had the Castaways, Kon Tiki, The Kona Kai and several more.
Upon crossing a small bridge over a sunken garden, guests would pass beneath a bamboo arch and were then guided by a tiki god to a grass hut for dining. Decor came from all over the Pacific, there was a vast selection of Rum drinks, entertainment, Polynesian food and of course, a Kansas City Steak.
There were two Kona Kai locations and both had an 8’ tiki carved by Oceanic Arts. The Kona Kai opened in June of 1975, and closed in the early 80s.
The Legend of the Kona Kai awaits your pleasure.
