Kona Kai was located in the Bala Cynwyd community of Philadelphia, in a new Marriott Hotel complex. Described as “obscenely extravagant,” almost every piece of decor was custom designed. From the Frigate Bird carved by tiki artist Jim Casey at the entrance to the flaming torches, impressive waterfall, koi pond, palm trees and the bamboo bridges guests crossed upon entering, the Kona Kai was “a place of enchantment, capturing mood and magic of the South Seas.” There was a full Polynesian menu and tiki drinks that were described by one reviewer as “bucket sized cocktails.”
The Marriott and Kona Kai closed and was demolished in 1985. Luckily many of the artifacts were saved and as recently as 2017, were purchased by Mark Sellers and incorporated into Michigan’s Max’s South Seas Hideaway.
