"Safe tropic breezes carry away care and tiki gods appease the war spirits ... leaping flames and garish masks thwart the demons lurking in the trembling shadows"
Located on Hamburgo in the intellectual and artistic Juárez neighborhood of Mexico City you could have found the Mauna Loa restaurant. After walking through the A-Frame entry, you would notice the live flamingos, large tikis, lava rock walls and colorful glass floats lamps. Their extensive menu was huge, about 1-1/2’ wide by 2’ and was full of beautiful full-color graphic illustrations.
The Mauna Loa had many unique tiki mugs and some are seen as artist’s renderings in their menu including a fertility goddess mug. What do you think they were serving in that one?
It's not clear when the Mauna Loa closed, but it certainly had the elements of the typical Polynesian Restaurant from the 70s and 80s.
