Located in Phoenix AZ on the self described “Funset Strip,” the Samoan Village was one of several tiki themed motor hotels on Van Buren. Situated on 15 acres of South Sea Atmosphere, the Samoan Village was “an island in the sun.” The restaurant and bar had a full Polynesian, French and American menu and tiki cocktails were attended to by Chuck Lanai. Diners could dance the night away, and enjoy nightly entertainment like fire walkers, lounge singers, and a swim and Samoan wear fashion show. In the Amakua cocktail lounge, aka your “office away from the office” guests enjoyed “Sam’s Secretary’s Special” - anyone know what was in it?
In addition to the restaurant and bar, the Samoan Village had a pool surrounded by tiki huts, a golf course and coffee shop.
More historical info on the "Funset Strip" can be found here.
The Samoan opened in 1964, and although is long gone, thankfully tiki culture lives on in Phoenix.
