The Islander is a fondly remembered Tiki bar, restaurant and nightclub (Latitude 20) that was located in Stockton, CA from 1963-1983. Originally owned by Hop Louie, Louie gets credit for hiring the architect to create the iconic Shipwreck exterior, and bringing Oceanic Arts on board to design the elaborate interior. In 1966 Tommy Lee became the owner, and the rumor is Louie lost the establishment in a crap game. The Islander had an extensive selection of tiki mugs and an equally extensive cocktail and dinner menu.

In addition to the obligatory thatch, tikis and float lamps, there was an outrigger canoe that hung over the customers’ heads, velvet paintings of topless Tahitian women, flaming torches, and fire waving hula dancers.

Lee sold The Islander in 1980, and it closed for good in 1982.
