The Lanai in San Mateo CA was located inside the Villa Hotel. Well loved among locals and visiting celebrities (like the Brat Pack), The Lanai had an extensive tiki menu and an impressive food menu that included Frogs Legs for $2.75 and Mandarin Pressed Duck for $3.00. The decor was impressive - a 20 foot fish tank, a huge lighted south sea island mural that would change from day to night, a waterfall wall and authentic luau pit. The extensive tiki bar menu was separated into “Tropic of Cancer, “Equator'' and “Tropic of Capricorn” and they touted that their rum drinks would “give out the power to change the world.” I say bring on the rum!
Closed in the late 80s, their iconic neon sign, koa tables and much of their tiki decor moved to a small location in a strip mall, which closed around the mid 90s.
